The Roanoke Obsession was originally intended to be an adaptation of Terrance McNally’s Sweet Eros a play about a man who kidnaps a woman and ties her to a chair in a remote cabin to tell her his maladjusted life story and his twisted perception of relationships.
Even growing up, little Johnny Armitage was always considered bad. So when Johnny ran away and never came back, everyone, including his father Sheriff Frank Armitage Sr., breathed a collective sigh of relief. But good things rarely last. Twenty years later, on the eve of his father’s retirement, Johnny came back leaving a trail of gruesome murders in his wake. As Frank Sr. and his oldest son Frank Jr. attempt to stop a killer, a pattern in the murders begins to emerge, shedding light on the stormy past between Johnny and his father and illuminating a dark secret underlying their sleepy little town. Frank Jr. slowly learns that no one is all they appear to be and everyone has something to hide. As a final piece to the puzzle, Johnny kidnaps his sister, Sara, ultimately leading to a manhunt through the rocky wilderness of Virginia, where both Johnny and Frank Sr. must face the demons buried deep within them and Frank Jr. must face the task of saving his sister and his dark family past.
"People always said Johnny was born bad. Now he may have had a couple of wires crossed in his head, but he wasn’t born a monster... We made him a monster. If it takes a village to raise a child, then we all must take responsibility for what he became, and the terror he brought down on us in the August heat." -Frank Jr.
